About This Suite's Name
This Suite is named after the Vasanoja family, who moved to Palmer from Minnesota in 1935 as part of the Matanuska Colony project. Lawrence “Larry” Vasanoja, who moved with his family at the age of eleven, went on to serve in the Army Air Corps in WWII, and, in the years after the war, went on to work at Alaska Sales and Service and manage the Palmer bulk fuel plant, becoming a prominent fixture of Palmer’s community. The Vasanoja family’s experiences have been preserved through letters archived by the Palmer Museum, offering insights into the challenges and daily life of early colonists in the region. We had the pleasure of meeting Larry and enjoyed listening to him tell stories about Myles Hyland and his experiences as a young boy growing up and living in The Last Frontier. Larry passed away at age 99 and was a lovely man. We wish his family well and are honored to have a room named after him and his family in our little piece of Palmer history.
